GEO / AEO

Built to be understood by AI, not just Google.

More people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI results for a recommendation than ever type a keyword into a search box. Those systems can only mention businesses they can read and understand.

In short
AI search optimisation means making your site machine-readable: unambiguous facts about your business, direct answers to real questions, accurate structured data and a fast, crawlable technical base. It cannot guarantee placement in any AI system — nothing can.

The six things we work on

01

Entity clarity

Who you are, what you do, where you operate and what you're known for — stated unambiguously in content and in structured data, so an AI system does not have to guess.

02

Answer-first content

Each important page opens with a direct, quotable answer to the question it addresses. That is what gets lifted into an AI response.

03

Structured data

Organisation, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, Article and Breadcrumb schema so machines read facts rather than interpret layout.

04

Clean, crawlable technical base

Fast server-rendered pages, sensible headings, real URLs, no content hidden behind scripts. AI crawlers are less forgiving than Google.

05

Consistency across the web

The same business name, phone number, address and service claims wherever you appear. Contradictions cost you confidence in every ranking system.

06

Evidence, not adjectives

Specific services, areas, processes and proof. 'Leading provider' means nothing to a language model; 'MOT testing in Perth since 2014' does.

What you get

This is not a separate mystery service bolted on top. It is included in how we build and optimise every site, and available as standalone work on an existing website.

  • Schema markup audit and implementation

  • Answer-first rewrites of key pages

  • An about and services structure AI can parse

  • FAQ content built from real customer questions

  • Crawler access checked for AI user agents

  • Consistent business facts across your web presence

Common questions

What is AI search optimisation?

It is structuring your website so AI answer engines — Google's AI results, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot — can read it, understand what your business does and where, and reference it accurately when someone asks a related question.

Is it different from normal SEO?

It overlaps heavily. Clean structure, fast pages, clear headings and accurate structured data help both. The difference is writing direct, quotable answers and making entity information — who, what, where — unambiguous.

Can you guarantee my business appears in ChatGPT or Google AI answers?

No. Nobody can, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something they cannot deliver. What we can do is remove the reasons AI systems currently cannot understand or cite your site.

Does this matter for a local trade business?

Increasingly yes. People ask AI assistants for recommendations the same way they used to type into Google. If your site does not clearly state what you do and where, you are not a candidate answer.

If the problem is not visibility but what AI systems and Google are saying about you, see online reputation management — including AI search reputation management.

The practical detail

How to check what AI sees of your business

Common mistakes that make you invisible to AI

We see the same few problems time and again. First is putting essential information inside an image. An AI cannot read your phone number, address, or service list if it's just part of a picture file; it must be actual text on the page.

Second is using vague marketing language. Phrases like 'a wide range of bespoke solutions' are meaningless to a machine. You need to list the specific solutions. Instead of 'serving the local community', state the actual towns and postcodes you cover.

Third is hiding your content behind clicks or scripts. If your key service details only appear after a user interacts with a fancy 'read more' button, the simple crawlers used by AI systems will likely miss it completely.

Why your 'About Us' page matters more than ever

Think of your 'About Us' page as a CV you're submitting to an AI. It's a primary document for the system to learn who is behind the business, what makes you credible, and why you should be trusted. This is a place for facts, not fluff.

For example, we state clearly that our founder, Robert, trained in motor mechanics and has over 15 years of hands-on SEO work. These are verifiable points that build a picture of expertise. An AI understands this much better than a claim of being 'passionate'. It helps the machine build a profile of a real, trustworthy entity, which is the foundation of being recommended.

This isn't just for local trades

While asking an AI for a local plumber or garage is becoming common, this process of clarification is vital for almost any business. We apply these same principles to national e-commerce sites like Pentland Press and information hubs like Car Manual All Makes.

An AI needs to understand what a campervan hire company like Caledonian Tourers actually includes in its hire package just as much as it needs to know the specific MOT classes a garage offers. If potential customers can ask detailed questions about your business, products, or services, then AI optimisation matters to you.

AEO is your first line of defence

What AI systems say about you is now a huge part of your online reputation. If an AI confidently gets your opening times wrong, misunderstands your service area, or confuses you with another business, it can cost you real customers.

AI search optimisation is a defensive measure. By providing clear, unambiguous information and structured data, you are feeding the AI the correct answers directly. This drastically reduces the chance that the system will have to guess, make a mistake, or pull in wrong information from a less reliable source. It is a core part of modern, ethical reputation management.

Will I need a complete website rebuild?

Not always. For some websites, the fix is about content and data. We can focus on rewriting key pages to be answer-first, implementing schema markup, and building out better 'About' and 'Service' pages as a standalone piece of work.

However, if a site is very slow, built on an old platform that's difficult for machines to crawl, or has its core information locked away by code, a rebuild is often the most sensible long-term solution. A solid technical base is non-negotiable for both traditional SEO and AEO. We will always give you a straight, practical assessment of what your website needs.
